Into the Wild Essay

ROL: Into the Wild Essay

English 4 is a class where we read novels & work on packets that help us with researching and understanding how literature can work. Once finished with reading we move on to write out an essay on the novel. We get a key question and answer it with our judgement which should be followed by quotes from the book and how we can support our answers. I think this is a valuable artifact for my future because it helps me understand what thing I can find in literature or for writing more perfectly constructed essay assignments. The Into the Wild essay makes us answer the question, “ is life on the road suited for everyone?”. I start my essay with a similar question to kind of bring it out a little more for myself, to understand it a little better. We are given a prompt as to how it should be written and quotes that can be found in the book. For another part of the essay we have to talk about advice that the main character gives a certain person and to answer if this is good advice that everyone can follow. There it is explained a little more with more detail on whether it is or isn’t.

Our final essay wanted us to explain if anyone could live out on the road and experience a lot of things the main character, Chris McCandless had during his journey. The essay required 750-1000 words, we also had to answer the prompt  and support out arguments with quotes and text from the book. I stated the essay like everyone else but i didn't eventually get stuck and just didn’t know how to continue. I took awhile for me to finish the essay but I was eventually able to get back to it and finish it. I learned how to use text from the book and find some information to support my argument while writing. I think what this work says about myself is that I still do need to improve but it's possible for me to reach a higher point in my writing.
A SLO I definitely want to work harder towards is being a better self directed learner because I do find myself asking for a “little too much” help. This sometimes goes to the point of just getting answers and not learning what I actually need to. Another SLO I’d like to work on more is thinking critically and creatively because I do think my work lacks necessary information that essays require. This artifact demonstrates my progression because i’m finding what I need to work on myself. I know these two SLO are important to me because they have shown me what I need to work on and how I can improve these. I could have done better in mastering skills needed for career and college because i didn’t add many quotes that were needed for evidence in the essay and I do think that they would have been necessary in all essays not just this one.

Now that I’ve looked back I can now say two of the most important things I’ve learned in English 4 are MLA formatting and putting footnotes when putting in information. These skills I have learned in this class will help me with giving information that is gathered correctly with sources so they will be credible.

College/Scholarship Essay

4. I have taken advantage of my education by coming to Diamond Technology institute. I have learned some pretty cool things like using milling machines or bandsaws or even 3d printing. These things could help prepare me for my future career by knowing basic things working with different types of machinery because I am going to be a blacksmith. This opportunity arrived when I was in middle school thinking of a high school to go to. I’ve taken business, industrial design, and 3d printing. So I do think some of those fields can help me out with my future career. I have faced plenty educational barriers throughout my schooling and they’re still with me right now in senior year. One major barrier is graduating high school. I've got plenty of work to do in short amount of time. I'm still trying hard to accomplish some of my goals set in place but we’ll have to see what happens.

5. The most significant challenge I have at the moment is graduating high school. Ter are still credits I have to make up, physical education hours, & community service hours I need to make up before even thinking about graduating. I have taken some steps to ensure that I’ll graduate like my academic interview with all my teachers and some other staff members so ensure a good plan for my future. I am also learning how to, still, manage my time with all these things in my head so that’s something to learn from. I want to eventually be able to learn how to overcome failure through these experiences and persevere through my challenges at the moment..

6. An academic subject that really influenced me, though I don't really get the chance to do, was the Industrial Design Class. During my sophomore year of high school I was excited to start metal fabrication my next year but that didn’t really end up happening. I still like the idea of metal fabrication and being a blacksmith so that’s what’s really been keeping my ideal career in mind. Metal fabrication requires hands on work, stamina, and strength. What I’ve been doing outside of school was a little bit of those things to build myself up. Taking apart my old airsoft guns and putting them back together was one of those hands on things that I enjoyed doing. Also going to the gym to build myself up was another part of that. Getting good grades in that class was simple enough and I also learned a few things.

7. What I’ve done to make out school a better place was help “beautify” it by joining the garden club. I helped plant plants, move big piles of mulch, and weed whack the overgrowth of our school’s “backyard”. I think I did contribute to a positive change in the school. I was inspired to act because sometimes I would just be bored at home after I did somethings so I needed a little time killer while helping out with some school things. I think it was somewhat of a big impact because it does look nicer than how it used to look. I also just liked the idea of a school garden.
